In May, the number of people forced to flee conflict, violence, and persecution crossed the 100 million mark for the first time on record. With over 12 million displaced, the war in Ukraine played a significant part in this, but many other crises continue to loom in the background. In fact, the number of protracted crises (lasting 5 or more years) continues to rise, blurring the line between refugees and local populations. In this context, the double hit of the pandemic and the Ukraine war is taking a heavy toll, particularly on lower incomes. Poverty has risen for the first time in 30 years, and inequalities continue to grow. How to avoid a vicious circle of poverty and instability? How to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor, especially in developing countries?
