The Mediterranean region continues to be one of the most severely affected by water scarcity, with 15 of the 20 most water-scarce countries globally – a challenge increasingly exacerbated by climate change. To ensure water security both in the near and long-term future, deeper international engagement on the sustainable use of water resources – driven by diplomacy – is needed. This session explores the opportunities for regional cooperation, between the different shores of the Mediterranean, particularly those offered by the shared management of water resources. By working together, Mediterranean countries have today the opportunity to make water a key pillar of cooperation and shared prosperity. The discussion should therefore assess some key questions, such as: how can regional initiatives and “blue diplomacy” be relaunched? What efforts can be undertaken to promote a truly “Euromediterranean” approach to the management of transboundary water resources, and to facilitate sustainable access to water in the region? And what role can blue diplomacy play in this regard?
