Special Dialogue with Sameh Shoukry
Sameh Shoukry was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in June 2014. In 1982 he became Second Secretary to the Cabinet of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs in Egypt. He served as Counselor to the Cabinet of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs in Cairo (1988-1990). He was then posted to New York City, working in Egypt’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations until 1994. Later that year, he returned to Cairo to serve as Director of the Department of the US and Canada at the Foreign Affairs Ministry. In 1995 Sameh Shoukry was promoted to Secretary for Information. He received his first ambassadorship when he became Egypt’s top diplomat in Austria. He served simultaneously as Ambassador and as Egypt’s Representative to the International Organisations in Vienna (1999-2003). In 2005, he returned to UN headquarters to be Egypt’s Permanent Representative at the world body, until he became Ambassador to the US (2008).
