The inextricable link that binds the two shores of the Mediterranean, already acknowledged by the EU in the relevant 2021 Agenda, is even more important today as the world is witnessing a shift towards a new global order defined by instability, uncertainty, fragmentation and polarization. In this context, the European Union is keen to relaunch the Euro-Mediterranean relations through a new Pact for the Mediterranean. The broader objective of the Pact is to deepen the partnership between the EU and its Southern Neighbourhood by a strengthened political commitment and through pragmatic, practical steps to deliver tangible results in areas of mutual interest. This session analyses the opportunities and challenges of this attempt to establish a new kind of partnership among equals between the EU and countries of the wider Mediterranean. How can the EU and its Partners in the South learn from past experience and start new cooperation? What lessons learned can be leveraged today and readapted to the new geopolitical dynamics of the wider Mediterranean? What concrete actions and projects can be implemented to strengthen multi-level cooperation between the two shores?
