Mauro Garofalo is in charge of international relations in the Community of Sant’Egidio. He took part, as a mediator, in the most recent peace initiatives of the Community of Sant’Egidio. He worked in particular for national reconciliation in the Central African Republic, Guinea Conakry, Libya and Niger.

ISPI International

The Italian Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI) is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit think tank providing leading research and viable policy options to government officials, business executives and the public at large wishing to better understand international issues. Founded in Milan, Italy, in 1934 thanks to the support of a group of businessmen led by Alberto Pirelli, founder of Pirelli S.p.A., ISPI has always adopted a pragmatic approach in analyzing geographical areas and topics of particular interest to Italy and Europe.

ISPI is the only Italian think tank – and among the few in Europe – combining policy-oriented research with an equally significant commitment to education and training, to conferences and advice on international trends for businesses, Institutions and the wider audience. Its work features an inter-disciplinary approach and partnerships with leading think tanks and universities from all over the world.

MED is a year-long initiative and a global hub for high-level dialogue on issues of shared interest in the Mediterranean.

Registrations are open for 10th edition of the Rome MED – Dialoghi Mediterranei/Mediterranean Dialogues 2024. The MED community will reconvene in Rome on 25-27 November for high-level discussions on the most critical issues affecting the wider Mediterranean.

The European Union and Maghreb countries are key trade partners. In recent years, significant focus has been placed on the establishment of sustainable supply chains, green energy corridors, and improved logistics: new synergies and complementarities between the two shores of the Mediterranean are expected to emerge in various industrial sectors. A deepening of EU-Maghreb economic integration is the long-term objective of this privileged partnership. Nevertheless, challenges remain, including regulatory issues, investment barriers, and the potential need to update trade agreements. How can economic integration between Europe and the Maghreb be advanced? What role can the private sector play in fostering stronger trade ties? And how might economic cooperation help mitigate geopolitical frictions?

As cross-border clashes between Hezbollah and Israel intensify, Lebanon fears a further escalation of tensions that could spread throughout the country. Beyond the ongoing conflict, the country is grappling with multiple crises: a political stalemate that has left Lebanon without a president for almost two years and an economic-financial crisis that has been strangling it for five years. At the same time, tension is mounting towards Syrian refugees, who have been made a scapegoat for the country’s inescapable vortex of crises. This event aims to analyse the internal challenges Lebanon is facing, while assessing the potential impact of a further escalation of violence on the southern border.
