MATHIEU DUCHÂTEL is Director of the Asia Program at Institut Montaigne since 2019. Before joining the Institute he was Senior Policy Fellow and Deputy Director of the Asia and China Program at the European Council of Foreign Relations (2015-2018), Senior Researcher and the Representative in Beijing of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (2011-2015), Research Fellow with Asia Centre in Paris (2007-2011) and Associate Researcher based in Taipei with Asia Centre (2004-2007). He has spent a total of nine years in Shanghai (Fudan University), Taipei (National Chengchi University) and Beijing and has been visiting scholar at the School of International Studies of Peking University in 2011/2012 and the Japan Institute of International Affairs in 2015. He holds a Ph.D in political science from the Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po, Paris).

MICHITO TSURUOKA is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Policy Management, Keio University. He is also Senior Fellow at the Tokyo Foundation for Policy Research. Prior to this, he served as a Special Adviser for NATO at the Embassy of Japan in Belgium (2005–08), and has been resident fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) on a GMF-Tokyo Foundation Fellowship (2009), and senior research fellow at the National Institute for Defense Studies. He also was a visiting fellow at the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies (RUSI) from May 2013 to March 2014. Studied political science and international relations at Keio University and Georgetown University and received a PhD in War Studies from King’s College London.

GUDRUN WACKER is Senior Fellow in the Asia Division at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik, SWP) in Berlin. Prior to that, she was Researcher at the Federal Institute for Russian, East European and International Studies in Cologne (1992–2000). She has also been Researcher at the Department for Chinese and Korean Studies, Eberhard-Karls-University Tübingen (1983–1992). Her research focuses on Chinese foreign and security policy, especially EU-China relations, China and the Asia-Pacific region and security cooperation in the Asia-Pacific more generally. She is currently a member of the Steering Committee of CSCAP EU and EU delegate at the Experts and Eminent Persons Group of the ASEAN Regional Forum.

YU JIE is Senior Research Fellow on China in the Asia-Pacific Programme at Chatham House, focusing on the decision-making process of Chinese foreign policy as well as China’s economic diplomacy.

Dr Yu Jie speaks and writes frequently at major media outlets such as BBC and Financial Times. She regularly briefs senior policy practitioners from the G7 member governments, the UK Cabinet Office and the Silk Road Fund in Beijing, as well as major FTSE 100 corporates. Yu Jie has testified at the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee and International Trade Committee, and was also head of China Foresight at LSE IDEAS.

FILIPPO FASULO is Co-Head of the Centre on Geoeconomics, ISPI, Italy. Before joining ISPI Filippo Fasulo served as the Director of the Italy-China Foundation’s Centre on Business Research (CeSIF). In 2014, he earned a Ph.D. in Politics and Istitutions from the Catholic University of Milan with a dissertation on the concept of power in China’s politics that was awarded the Cesare Bonacossa Prize by the University of Pavia. In 2012, he received a MSc in China in Comparative Perspectives at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Since 2011, he has been lecturing on China-related topics at the Catholic University of Milan. He is also Academic Secretary for the course in Far Eastern Studies at the Accademia Ambrosiana in Milan. From 2014 to 2016, he has been a board member of the Institute for Public Administration Science (ISAP – Istituto per la scienza dell’amministrazione pubblica). His research focus is on Asia with particular interest in China at both the domestic and international levels.
