The Middle East and North Africa’s energy sector is challenged by ongoing regional conflicts and economic uncertainties at the global level. The risk of disruptions to energy facilities and supplies – particularly through strategic chokepoints – is mounting. At the same time, the uncertainty caused by accelerating trade wars is casting doubt on the feasibility of the energy transition. In an unstable geopolitical context, energy independence has become ever more strategic, and it requires both energy routes’ diversification and foster the energy transition. At the same time, the development of resilient energy corridors emerges as a key factor to enhance resilience. How has the global energy sector been impacted by growing instability in the wider Mediterranean region? What coping strategies are regional countries deploying to improve energy security? How is the current turbulence affecting prospects for further development of the region’s energy industries, from oil and natural gas to renewables?
