Energy transition has become a political and economic imperative. It implies, however, a long-lasting effort of adaption and several fundamental challenges: the MENA region and especially oil and gas producing countries will be drastically transformed by the systemic changes induced by decarbonization policies and low and zero-carbon technology developments.
The decarbonization of energy facilities of the region represents a fundamental component in the path towards an energy transition and in mitigating climate change consequences. Reducing the environmental footprint through the development of solar and wind energy, green and blue hydrogen or carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects, decarbonized energy products as well as sustainable supply chains, notably for bioenergy and biorefineries, are all initiatives that have the power to play a critical role in achieving a greener future.
Which role can global energy leaders play in greening the economy of oil and gas producing countries, in order to contribute to their strategy of energy transition? What kind of responsibility do international and national oil and gas companies have in supporting local and regional efforts towards carbon neutrality? How do you see this industry in ten, twenty and thirty years when fossil fuels will represent less than a fifth of the global energy supply, according to the most reliable scenarios to reach climate neutrality by 2050 as requested by international science?
